Roller Derby Knife Fight: Part One

I sat down with Miss Bawdy Slam of the DC Rollergirls before this Saturday's double header at the DC Armory. I didn't record the conversation at all at I wrote this up way after we talked but I remember the conversation went kind of like this:


RSBYT: How did you get into this?
Bawdy Slam: I got into roller derby because I needed an athletic activity, and it looked like fun. I had seen some bouts back in San Diego, and I was really impressed. After going camping with some of the girls on that league, I also learned that they liked to party. So I was sold.
And what team are you on?
Scare Force One
I saw you guys rough up the Demon Cats in January, how are you guys doing?
We're in first. Well my team isn't necessarily in 1st place at this point, but we are skating in the championships in April.
What position do you play? Are there positions?
So... I'm a blocker, and I play all of those positions (pivot, outside, inside, back).
Have you ever made another skater cry? If so by what means? Force?
I have never made another skater cry, at least not to my knowledge. I love hitting bitches, but I need to work on my power and my control. For now, I'm content to annoy somebody into submission.
Who's the toughest girl out there?
Hmm... the toughest?
Yeah who can dish it out and take it if they have to?
I guess I would go with Free Rad
Free Radical? The co captain of the Demon Cats?
Yeah, She's one of the captains. She's tough. She's a great jammer
Who's the best jammer in the league?
Marion Barrycuda. Or Free Radical. Camilla the Hun is up there too.

What is your favorite Roller Girl name?
In the league Ovary Action. In so many ways. But there is a roller girl named The Red Vag of Courage in Nashville.

Yeah there's basically no rules aside from the registry.
Yeah I've heard all the names have to go through an international database...
Yeah. and it takes a long time for them to register it. I still haven't heard back from them.
Are you guys gonna crush your opponents on Saturday?
Scare Force One isn't playing. But the DC All-Stars are playing against Montreal and The Demon Cats are taking on the Cherry Blossom Bombshells
How does that look?
It's still a little thick on this side.
